Daily sketchblog updates NOW at LegendofBill.com!

Hello, Traveler!
I apologize for the sparse blog posts here at Reddickulous.com. I confess, I've sort of moved my daily sketchblog post operation to the website of my growing webcomic Legend of Bill! The strip updates every Monday and Thursday, and I update the sketchblog below it every day, sometimes 2 or 3 times a day!

So head on over there, my friends, as it's a lot easier for me to update one blog than two. I would humbly invite you to re-bookmark my sketchblog to THIS SITE!

Thank you for your readership and make sure you drop some comments into the Legend of Bill blog posts so I know you made the transition! ;-)
Kindest Regards,

David

Legend of Bill going strong!

Hello, my friends! Uber-apoligies for not posting in awhile - I've been sinking so much effort into my new webcomic Legend of Bill that I've been neglectful here - but just remember, if it seems light pickens here from time to time, there's lots to see at www.LegendofBill.com, so come over for a visit! LOB is going very strong, and you can find daily blog posts there as well, usually 2-3 blog posts a day actually, and TONS of skethes and LOB news. Come visit, and stay awhile!

Legend of Bill -- IS LIVE!!!

Dear friends of Bill,I am proud to unveil the Legend of Bill website! It’s my pleasure to give you a sneak peek into things to come here! The strip will launch with strip #1 Tuesday, May 27, and will run twice weekly, every Tuesday and Thursday. I invite you to visit Bill, Frank and Gina (who will make her appearance a little later in the strip) now, poke around, make yourself at home (as it IS YOUR realm afterall to explore), read about the strip, and help support a cartoonist in bringing some characters who have lived in his sketchbooks for a very long time to life. I cannot wait to show you what’s in store.

See you in the realm of Bill!

Debuting today: TALL TALE FEATURES!

I've joined forces with a group of cartoonist friends not unlike the Justice League of comics called "Tall Tale Features!"

Today is opening day and I hope you'll all head on over and check it out. Tall Tale Features is a group of well-known (in both print syndication and webcomics) and professionally-minded cartoonists who have banded together to say "Hey, quality webcomics found here!"This is illustrious group consists of:
• Lucas Turnbloom of Imagine This• Brian Anderson of Dog Eat Doug• David Reddick of Legend of Bill• Mike Witmer of Pinkerton• Scott Metzger of Stewart• Brock Heasley of The SuperFogeysYeah, that's some serious talent up there. Head on over to TALL TALE FEATURES to find links to each one and check 'em out. Quality stuff! What else can Tall Tale offer you? Glad you asked. On the main page you're going to find a frequently updated blog filled with news about your favorite comics, pop culture musings and whatever else we feel like talking about. It's also your source for the latest news on all the Tall Tale comics. Getting into the site a bit more, you'll find bios of each of the creators on Tall Tale and a link to "TTF Radio" a podcast that will be starting up shortly, hosted by Tom Racine (of Comics Coast To Coast) and featuring the Tall Tale crew on a rotational basis. But the heart and soul of Tall Tale Features has got to be the FORUM. There you'll find separate forums for all your favorite Tall Tale webcomics, along with other forums for discussing nonsense, movies, etc....and a place to plug your own work, too!So, without further ado, Tall Tale officially kicks off today so now's a great time to get in there, register on the forums and start being a part of things. We expect big things ahead and hope you'll be there for the ride, and join us in the fun!

Yours in Comics,

David

The Trek Life characters

Get to know The Trek Life characters!

The Trek Life April '07

Been missing "The Trek Life," my thrice-weekly comic strip I did for CBS/STARTREK.COM for 2 1/2 years, so to help my withdrawal, I think I'll post a few strips here and there from 1 year ago this time, just for the fun of it. Hope you like 'em, and if you're not familiar with The Trek Life, hit the link and check 'em out! And be sure to check out Star Trek Magazine at your local bookstore for a new "The Trek Life" in every issue too!

Star Trek Magazine Q illustration

A fun illustration I did for Star Trek Magazine a few issues back...

Friday, April 25, 2008

And now for something completely different...

A TOTALLY different type of sketch than what I typically post here... something I sketched at a local park ... I have always loved this scene ... and you can't beat it when you have some geese who actually relatively stand still (for the most part! The beauty of it is, when one moves, you just look at another and can MOSTLY extrapolate the pose!)

The Legend is near...

Here's a very rough sketch out of the 1st Legend of Bill strip, showing our hero at work, with the bossman ever-looming. Needless to say, Bill is tired of the 9 to 5. Adventure can't be far behind!
Anyhoo, progress is near completion on LOB. Strips are in the hopper, the LOB Comicpress pages are nearly complete, the fine folks at SoulGeek.com have put out the red carpet for Bill, Frank and Gina to reside (we'll call it the "SoulGeek Inn," in 'Bill' terms), and we're about to rock n' roll. Legend of Bill will be weekly, to start, with the intention of increasing it's frequency, with endless possibilities. So, my friends, become a Bill supporter! Sign up for the LOB newsletter, and you'll receive a nifty greeting and some sketch art for fun via e-mail in return... and scroll down this very blog for lots of LOB details and extras as we near launch at the end of this month!! Oh, and I'm working on a map too, highlighting the realm of Bill! ;-)
More details to come!

Legend of Bill: Bill's horse...

A sketch I JUST started awhile ago, showing Bill's horse. I basically wanted to draw Bill on his horse, so I started this sketch ... and there's ol' Frank, just happy to be along for the ride! I think I'll keep rolling on it and put some villianous bad guys in the background amongst the forestry, and see what happens... then, maybe color it up and make a desktop wallpaper out of it or something! ;-) Stay tuned here for progress...

TOS Animated work...

Back a few years ago, while I was working heavily on "The Trek Life" for CBS/STARTREK.COM, I pitched an image to them about the TOS Animated Series, and a fun comic tie-in idea I had involving the TNG crew in the same style. While due to licensing issues it didn't fly, I thought I'd show this, as it's not been seen in ages.

As a result of this image, however, I was, in 2007, asked to create an official piece of TOS Animated Series artwork. As it turns out, as many of my fellow Trekkers know, Walter Koenig's character Chekov was not part of the animated series... as a result, there has never been up to this point an existing "officially sanctioned" TOS: Animated Series drawing of Chekov as he "would have" been seen. CBS commissioned me to create the only one known within Trek Animated canon for the official archives, which I will share here, and can also be seen in the archives now of Startrek.com. I basically obviously mimicked the exact style and feel, even color scheme of the TOS Animated Series (which I have always been a huge fan of since childhood), down to the production value and 2D limited-animation style seen in the series.
It's a little piece of something special to this Trekkie from waaaaay back. Enjoy!

I'm back now from WizardWorld LA, and what a great time. will post some pix and such from the show soon!

More from the sketchbook

No matter what I'm working on, or how busy I may be, I confess... I always find time to doodle in my sketchbook. There's nothing more freeing than letting your mind wander with a pencil or pen on paper, is there? I'm always interested in the types of sketchbooks other cartoonists and artists use, too... The type of paper dictates the types of media one can use, and all artists have their preferences, including style (hardbound, spiral, clipboard, etc), even the brand of the sketchbook. So, what kind do you use?

Today's Dork Tower Gary Gygax Tribute

Please head over to my good friend John Kovalic's Website and see today's Dork Tower comic strip... it's a beautiful tribute to Gary Gygax, co-creator of Dungeons & Dragons and co-founder of TSR, among other great things. Well done, John, well done.

Compulsive doodler

I'm a compulsive doodler... bottom line: I love to draw. Even if it's a full page of inane nothingness that involves little more than moving pen across paper, I love the FEEL of pencil or pen across paper. And I often get this result ... a bunch of mind-dump-matter that is freakish to sift through, but always a lot of fun to revisit. This is a page out of a 2001 sketchbook... good luck deciphering the nothingness! All you need now is some Pink Floyd playing in the background... Hm... maybe I should do a whole series of this stuff! ;-)

From the Sketchbook...

Some straight pen and ink doodle action from the ol' sketchbook... done in a meeting! Doodling with a pen (or pencil for that matter) at times like this, for no other reason than the sheer pleasure of moving pen on paper is sort of like taking an unexpected nap in the middle of the day ... you're not really planning on it, and you have no idea how it'll turn out. It just does, and that can be very fun, relaxing and satisfying.

What's not funny about talking styrofoam cups, I ask ya'?

Editorial Cartoon fun...

In addition to my regular comics and illustration work, I also create weekly editorial cartoons for my local newspaper (and occasionally for national papers as well) ... this is one that cracked me up on a local Indiana issue about horse racing... steroids... it ain't just for baseball, kids!

Convention photos

As I prepare for my forthcoming 2008 convention appearances for my Star Trek, sci-fi and comics work, I always think back on the past ones as well... it is my pleasure throughout the year to attend Star Trek, sci-fi and comics conventions as a guest, from my official Star Trek work on STARTREK.COM and various other CBS outlets, to now my Roddenberry Productions work for the great Roddenberry.com. I LOVE conventions... I'm a shameless ham, love to get on stage and talk, love to meet fans and newfound friends and especially love to draw for these wonderful people. I'll post some photos here and there of some of my convention happenings backstage, the great people I've had a chance to meet, and maybe a story or two to boot. In the meantime, here are a couple of pix with just a few of the fantastic folks I've had the pleasure to talk to and meet, such as the smoothest man alive, Mr. Avery Brooks (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), the very cool and friendly Jonathan Frakes (Star Trek: The Next Generation and movies), the uber-talented Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica and The Bionic Woman) and a few borg to boot! Just a lil' sampling of how easy it is to get assimilated if you're not looking behind you at a convention!!

"The Trek Life" creative process

I'm often asked about my working process for creating my comics, in this case, for example, "The Trek Life," my thrice-weekly webcomic at STARTREK.COM. My process starts out VERY rough. After the writing and super rough doodles are complete (always done in my sketchbook), I then enter into the sketch phase of the actual comic that is nearly incoherent in the beginning, and the drawings basically build and build, like molding clay, to the final product. Here you can see the creative process behind a Sunday format strip, from beginning to end... pencil roughs, to inks, to color, which I do in Photoshop. Enjoy!
